(AP Online Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Mars lander loses day of work after data glitchLOS ANGELES (AP) _ The Phoenix lander stopped digging soil near Mars' north pole Wednesday as engineers on Earth worked to fix a glitch that caused the loss of a day's worth of photos. The problem was discovered late Tuesday after the spacecraft dug a trench inside a polygon-shaped surface feature that was likely caused by seasonal expansion and shrinking of ice.

Both sides claim victory in Calif. stadium rulingBERKELEY, Calif. (AP) _ Supporters and foes of a proposed University of California, Berkeley sports center that ignited a rancorous tree-sitting protest claimed victory after a judge issued a complex ruling on the matter. Superior Court Judge Barbara Miller's 129-page ruling Wednesday partially granted certain requests made in lawsuits seeking to stop the project while partially denying others, leading to the conflicting interpretations.

Scientists fighting disease with climate forecastsWASHINGTON (AP) _ A cyclone wrecks coastal Myanmar, spawning outbreaks of malaria, cholera and dengue fever. Flooding inundates Iowa, raising an array of public health concerns. As these disasters draw attention to weather hazards, which many fear could be exacerbated by climate change, scientists are working to be able to better predict health dangers as they forecast the weather.

Peanut probe part of NASA missionGRIFFIN, Ga. (AP) _ Tim Williams' goal was to create a device to test soil moisture around peanut pods, but his modest invention is now helping probe the soil of the Red Planet for traces of water. Williams was on sabbatical in 1987 working with a Washington State University team led by soil scientist Gaylon Campbell when he started to design a device to measure the water content around delicate peanut pods without destroying them.

Catch-22: Feds cut climate research to save fuelWEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ They haven't rechristened a ship the Irony, but federal researchers are canceling and cutting back on voyages aimed at studying climate change and ocean ecosystems so they can save money on boat fuel. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has scrapped at least four trips nationwide and is shortening others "because of the increase in petroleum prices," chief spokesman Anson Franklin said Wednesday.

House adds extra shuttle flight in NASA budgetWASHINGTON (AP) _ The House on Wednesday approved a $20 billion NASA spending bill that calls for an extra Space Shuttle flight before the spacecraft program is shut down. The 2.8 percent increase in funds for the fiscal year starting in October was widely supported by both parties in the 409-15 vote. But the bill drew opposition from the Bush administration, which said the additional shuttle flight threatened NASA's ability to phase out the nearly three-decade-old program in 2010 and concentrate on the new equipment it needs to return man to the moon. There are 10 more shuttle flights scheduled.

Utah announces 'major dinosaur fossil discovery'SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ A newly discovered batch of well-preserved dinosaur bones, petrified trees and even freshwater clams in southeastern Utah could provide new clues about life in the region some 150 million years ago. The same source quoted a monk from the area saying: "What is happening in the monasteries now with regard to patriotic education is a real disaster for monks, we are trying to practice our religion but it is hardly possible." The same report said that some monks were leaving the monasteries in response to the campaign. The patriotic education campaign is also being extended to laypeople in Machu.

Security Lockdown At Tibetan Monastery for New Patriotic Education Campaign
By International Campaign for Tibet

Dramatic images show armed troops arriving at Tsendrok monastery in Mayma township, Machu (Chinese: Maqu) county in Gansu Province on the morning of April 18. A Tibetan source told ICT that the large military convoy from Lanzhou (North West Military Division), of approximately 27 vehicles, arrived at the monastery without any warning. The source, who said that there were hundreds of armed personnel in the vehicles, added: "The soldiers barged into the monastery, conducted random searches, and broke down doors, windows, and other objects." They cooked food for themselves from the monastery's supplies, and when they left that evening, took with them a number of valuable and precious religious artefacts, according to the same source, a Tibetan in exile with connections in the area.

The monastery has reportedly filed a complaint based on the confiscation of the artefacts. Similar searches - for items of political significance such as Dalai Lama pictures - took place in other monasteries in the area at around the same time. This is one of several reports received by ICT of religious artefacts being seized and taken away by troops from monasteries - it has also reportedly happened in Tongkor (Chinese: Huangyuan) county in Qinghai and Labrang (Chinese: Xiahe) in Gansu province. There are indications that these are actions not necessarily sanctioned by higher officials.

Another Tibetan source told ICT: "The personal possessions of monks as well as objects like small statues and antique china bowls have been stolen by police during raids on several monasteries. There is evidence that these actions are by local security forces taking the law into their own hands." The looting of monasteries during raids also occurred during the crackdown in the late 1980s in Lhasa.

According to reports circulating in the area, local Tibetans are disturbed by other actions of security personnel now entrenched in Machu - in particular, news has reached ICT of soldiers or armed police shooting and eating Tibetan mastiff dogs, and also taking cash from monasteries where patriotic education is being enforced.

A stringent campaign of patriotic education has begun recently in the monasteries of the nomadic area of Machu county, where a major protest against Chinese rule occurred on March 16. There are nine monasteries in this area, mostly with small populations of monks, and many of them were involved in the protests in March. More than 100 personnel were sent into the area to implement patriotic education in the monasteries after the protests broke out in March, and there was a particular emphasis - as with other campaigns across Tibet - on denunciations of the Dalai Lama.

Korean Scientists Clone Tibetan Mastiff

A team of Korean scientists led by stem-cell expert Hwang Woo-suk has reportedly succeeded in cloning a Tibetan mastiff, a rare dog breed originating in Tibet and neighboring regions.
The team says it has produced 17 clones of the dog since April at the request of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

While it has yet to produce an academic paper on its purported success, the team insists a DNA test conducted by a separate institute has confirmed all 17 of the pups to be clones.

A South Korean team led by disgraced stem cell scientist Hwang Woo-suk is claiming it has created 17 clones of an endangered dog breed popular in China.

The Sooam Biotech Research Foundation said in a statement that the cloned Tibetan mastiff dogs were born in April, two months after being requested by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The foundation said it takes two months to produce cloned dogs from pregnancy, but it declined to discuss its success rate, citing internal policy.

The foundation said that all 17 dogs had been cloned from two Tibetan mastiffs - female and male - through six surrogate dogs, citing blind DNA tests by another institute.

However, an official of Kogene Biotech, the Seoul-based institute specialising in DNA analysis that did the tests, said it did not take its own samples from the dogs and that the samples it tested were provided by the foundation.

Kogene Biotech said it did not know for certain if the samples came from cloned animals or the original dogs, or a combination of both, the official said.

In 2005, Hwang and his team of Seoul National University scientists successfully created the world's first known dog clone, an Afghan hound named Snuppy, an achievement that was independently confirmed.

Hwang scandalised the international scientific community in 2005 when his breakthrough human cloning research involving embryonic stem cells was found to have been faked.
